| Why are Cleanings Necessary?
Plaque, a soft sticky film, forms on teeth constantly.
Plaque can form within minutes after a meal, snack, or drink.
If plaque is allowed to remain on teeth for sufficient time, sometimes
only a few hours, it begins to harden. The natural calcium from
your own saliva will begin to deposit in the plaque, hardening it and
making it impossible for regular brushing or flossing to remove.
The hardened plaque is now
called tartar, or calculus and needs to be removed by a dentist or hygienist
using special instruments. If the tartar is allowed to remain
on the teeth for too long, it can lead to
gum disease.
How Often are Cleanings Necessary?
For most people one cleaning
every six months will help keep teeth and gums in their best condition.
By keeping regular 6-month appointments, your dentist or hygienist can
monitor your gums closely to detect any changes. Early detection
and regular maintenance are the keys to stopping gum disease before
any damage has occurred.
Your dentist or hygienist
will also point out any problematic areas that may require more detailed
hygiene. This will help you prevent problems from getting worse.
Some people with minor gum
problems may require more frequent cleanings. Depending on the
situation, it may be necessary to have cleanings every 4 months or even
every 3 months. If gum problems are more severe, then
gum treatment may be necessary.
Why is Polishing
Necessary?
The best part of a cleaning
is that silky smooth feeling. Having your teeth polished will:
-
remove plaque,
-
smooth the surface,
-
make it more difficult for
plaque to stick and form,
-
fortify your teeth using
the fluoridated polishing paste,
-
leave you with a fresh feeling.
How Many Cleanings Does
My Insurance Cover?
Most insurance plans cover
one cleaning every six months. If you require more frequent cleanings
then you will need to pay for the additional cleanings.
